Treasure It, a new neighborhood app built in Brooklyn, makes it effortless for neighbors to give and get free things locally—no selling, no shipping, no hassle. Inspired by the city’s beloved stooping culture and community Buy Nothing groups, Treasure It brings that same spirit of generosity into a simple, organized, and privacy-friendly app.
“We wanted to make giving things away feel effortless,” said Benjamin Schachter, Treasure It’s founder and lead engineer. “So many good things end up on the curb because it’s hard to coordinate pick-ups. Treasure It takes the back-and-forth out of the process and helps neighbors connect on their own time.”
A Smarter Way to Share Locally
Treasure It’s new centralized scheduling feature lets Givers set their availability once and allows Recipients to book pickup times directly—eliminating endless messages and missed meetups. Users can manage all their posts in one place, track activity, and receive reminders for upcoming pickups.
Safety remains central to the experience. Address aliasing shows posts with a nearby location, and exact addresses unlock only when someone indicates they are en route to pick up an item. Combined with real-time status updates, Givers stay in control while keeping their details private.
For anyone frustrated by “Is this still available?” messages on legacy marketplaces, Treasure It streamlines the process so good items stay out of the landfill and in the neighborhood.
Piloting in Brooklyn
Treasure It currently serves Boerum Hill, Fort Greene, Clinton Hill, Prospect Heights, Park Slope, Downtown Brooklyn, and Cobble Hill. Since its local launch, more than 300 Brooklyn residents have re-homed hundreds of items—from furniture and books to baby gear and kitchenware—saving money and reducing waste.
