Treasure It Launches in Brooklyn: A Digital Stoop for Giving and Getting Free Things Locally

Treasure It, a new neighborhood app built in Brooklyn, makes it easy for people to give and get free things from nearby neighbors—no selling, no shipping, no hassle. Inspired by the city’s beloved “stooping” culture and local Buy Nothing groups, Treasure It brings that same spirit of generosity into a simple, organized, and privacy-friendly app.

“We wanted to make giving things away feel effortless,” said Benjamin Schachter, Treasure It’s founder and lead engineer. “So many good things end up on the curb because it’s hard to coordinate pick-ups. Treasure It takes the back-and-forth out of the process and helps neighbors connect on their own time.”

A Smarter Way to Share Locally

Treasure It’s newest feature, centralized scheduling, lets Givers set their availability once and have Recipients book pickup times directly—eliminating endless messages and missed meetups. Users can also manage all their posts in one place, track activity, and get reminders for upcoming pickups.

Treasure It also focuses on safety with address aliasing - posts are shown with a “nearby location” instead of a Giver’s actual address - and exact addresses only unlock when someone indicates that they are en route to pick up an item.

For those frustrated by endless messages asking “Is this still available?” on Facebook Marketplace, Craigslist, or other platforms, Treasure It really does make it easier to give things away without becoming overwhelmed.

Piloting in Brooklyn

Treasure It is currently available in Boerum Hill, Fort Greene, Clinton Hill, Prospect Heights, Park Slope, Downtown Brooklyn, and Cobble Hill. Since its local launch, 300+ Brooklyn residents have already re-homed hundreds of items, from furniture and books to baby gear and kitchenware, helping save money while reducing waste.
